Welcome to The 3&2 Baseball Club of Johnson County, a private nonprofit program organized in 1951 by a group of civic-minded parents. It provides youth an opportunity to learn and play competitive baseball and abide by the rules of good sportsmanship.

Game rules are patterned after American Major League baseball rules as modified by the 3&2 rulebook.
Team organization, player participation and special playing rules are published in the official 3&2 manual which is revised annually and distributed to each team manager. Questions can be answered by calling the 3&2 League office Monday-Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., (913) 888-8055. During the fall season office hours are reduced and may vary please call prior to coming out.

How do I get a team into 3&2?

To enter a team into the 3&2 league, managers need to complete a manager's application on-line. The Board of Directors reviews all applications. Managers will receive additional information from the league in January. Once registration is complete, rosters and fees are turned into the league office. Schedules are available on-line and also distributed prior to the start of the season at a general membership meeting.

What if only have a few players? How do I get more players?

A team can be formed with just a nucleus of players from your high school area. Registration occurs in January and February and at that time, players that do not have a team to play on will register with the league in their high school area. Managers can then pick up players from that list and add them to their roster.

How competitive is 3&2?

In the coach pitch and machine pitch divisions (kindergarten through 2nd grades), the emphasis is placed on learning how to play the game and every player bats and plays defensively. In the 3rd grade through the 6th grade divisions, rules require that teams bat through the entire roster, limited pitching appearances and each youngster plays a minimum number of innings defensively in each game.

As the players become older, starting with the 7th grade level, normal baseball rules and strategy are used. Players earn the right to have more playing time by working hard and improving their individual and team skills. Most managers try to play as many people as possible in each game, but it is not mandatory to do so.
Teams are seeded in all divisions to try to give balance to the playing schedule and prevent mismatches in leagues. First league teams are usually stronger than the second, third or fourth league teams in the same grade level.

How is the organization administered?

An elected, thirteen-member, volunteer, executive board meets on a monthly basis to set policy and guide the organization. The league staff carries out the decisions of the executive board and is responsible for seeding the teams in leagues, scheduling games and running the program on a day to day basis.

Rosters, waivers and fees are collected by the manager and then turned into the 3&2 office.

How are teams formed?

Teams are formed within the boundaries of each of the Shawnee Mission, Olathe, Blue Valley, Gardner and DeSoto/Mill Valley High Schools, and by the current grade levels of the players. For example, all 1st grade players in the SM East area will play on a team formed specifically in that high school area. 3&2 encourages teams that may be interested in playing in tournaments to form by grade and age, with players not turning the next older age by May 1st of the current year.

Grade divisions are listed below. Each division plays on fields suitable for its age.

New teams are permitted to enter the program with a complete team or with just a nucleus of players. Individual players will be placed on teams on a space available basis. Normally, players are required to return to their last season’s team, unless they get a release from last year’s manager. There are no tryouts in the kindergarten through 6th grade divisions. In the 7th, 8th and high school divisions tryouts are held by teams.

How long is the season?

Teams are formed in January, February and March of each year. The regular season begins in late April for most teams (May for coach pitch) and ends about the third week in July. Top teams in the 3rd grade through 8th grade and all teams in the 2nd grade machine pitch league advance to the season-ending Division Championship Tournament. Teams at all levels have the opportunity to play in tournaments that can lead to regional and national competition. 3&2 is affliated with USSSA and hosts tournaments throughout the summer for the 2nd grade through high school divisions. Go to the tournament section on the web site to see tournament opportunities. Call the league office for more information.

The pre-school t-ball league will play 10 games beginning in early June schedule while the kindergarten coach pitch leagues play nine games. The 1st and 2nd grade machine pitch league plays a 14-game schedule. 3rd and 4th grade teams also have a 14-game schedule. 5th and 6th grade teams play a 16-game schedule. 7th and 8th grade teams play 18 games. Senior teams play a 3&2 league schedule and an outside schedule against some of the best teams in the metropolitan area.

What are 3&2's expenses?

A well-run baseball program is expensive. Large portions of the fees go for insurance premiums for players and coaches for baseball related injuries. Trained, paid umpires officiate every game except in the t-ball coach pitch divisions. Other expenses include playing field and building maintenance, uniformed security and administrative costs.

What does a team manager need to do?

All managers in the 3&2 program have the opportunity to participate in training clinics sponsored by the Club, usually in late January or early February. The manager must ascertain the status of all players on the team in regard to proper birth date/grade level, correct high school area, etc. It is a manager’s responsibility to all players on his previous year’s roster to inform them of registration dates, when contracts and fees are due and game schedules. A manager needs to have knowledge of the game and the ability to relay that knowledge to the team through practice. A manager and his coaches should be role models, leading by good example. This also includes control of his players and families throughout their time at the complex.

How are umpires assigned?

Each year, high school age players on 3&2 teams are recruited to be new umpires and, along with umpires with previous experience, attend a series of five to six training sessions conducted by our umpire supervisors. New umpires start with officiating at the younger levels. As they gain skill and ability, they move up to the older age levels. 3&2 is always looking for new umpires. For more info click here or contact the 3&2 office.

How important is sportsmanship?

Sportsmanship is one of the most important aspects of the program. Lifelong skills of teamwork and sportsmanship are developed in the ages encompassed in the 3&2 program. A sportsmanship chairman, three assistants and an anonymous 40-50-member committee observe every session of games at the 3&2 complex. Profanity will not be tolerated at games or practices. Use of alcohol and/or drugs will not be tolerated at the 3&2 complex. Proper dealings with umpires are encouraged. Ejections, which carry a mandatory one game suspension, do occur. The sportsmanship committee deals with more flagrant actions. If interested in serving on the sportsmanship committee you may complete an on-line form and then will be contacted.

Where do the teams practice?

3&2 has access to most school fields in the Shawnee Mission School District. Permits will be distributed by the league office once the team has turned in all of their registration information. Some time is also available for fields in the various city parks. Check with your city for availability. If you have access to a non-school field, you are encouraged to use that and leave the permits for those who need them.
